Bird flu strikes back in Indonesia

Avian flu has returned in Indonesia. Several regions have recently reported outbreaks. Though no one has yet died after the virus’ reappearance, bird flu must not be taken lightly.
Indications of the outbreaks were easily detected as they followed the national and global alert textbook. Hundreds of chicken suddenly died in Deli Serdang regency in North Sumatra, Surakarta, Central Java and Garut regency, West Java. Five people also displayed flu symptoms soon after hundreds of poultry in their neighborhoods died.

This time the local governments have responded quickly, taking all necessary preliminary measures, including intensifying supervision, distributing brochures on how to deal with the virus and preparing medicine in case the virus infects humans. A mass culling of infected fowl and the restriction of poultry distribution were ordered in Deli Serdang. Disinfectant was sprayed in areas where chickens were suspected to have died from the virus.


Local authorities have learned from their previous mistakes, when a combination of a lack of awareness and misinformation turned the virus into a ruthless harbinger of death.


The World Health Organization has underlined that the fight against avian influenza should involve agricultural officials and farmers as the virus infects animals in the first place. The world body said that a good response to H5N1 would require active surveillance of animals to rapidly detect cases, solid diagnosis, fair compensation for farmers who have to cull birds and public information and education programs.

In many cases, bird flu struck after poultry farmers failed to change their business-as-usual mindset, despite repeated epidemics. The farmers remained unaware of hygiene and maintained their traditional backyard chicken pens until their livestock grew sick and died.

Indonesia has pledged to eliminate the H5N1 virus by 2014, but the goal may not be achieved without major changes.

Mongolia veterinary agency confirms PRRS outbreak

The Veterinary and Animal Breeding Agency in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, has reported an outbreak of PRRS in the country’s Darkhan-Uul province, in the district of Darkhan.
The agency reported the outbreak on February 20 to the Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The report did not state in what facility the outbreak occurred, but 66 swine were found susceptible, of which 14 proved affected. Eleven animals died, after which the rest was destroyed.

The source for the outbreak so far is unknown, although it was reported as suspect last year. Measures were taken like quarantine, screening, zoning and disinfection. Vaccination or treatment was not applied.

อินเดียทำลายสัตว์ปีก 4,000 ตัว ป้องกันไข้หวัดนก

เจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขทำลายเป็ดและไก่ 4,000 ตัว จากฟาร์มทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของรัฐ Tripura หลังตรวจพบว่ามีสัตว์ปีกติดเชื้อไข้หวัดนก
ทีมเจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุข 16 ทีม ทำลายสัตว์ปีกในรัศมี 1 กิโลเมตรจากฟาร์มดังกล่าว และห้ามเคลื่อนย้ายสัตว์ปีก และจำหน่ายสัตว์ปีกหรือไข่จากฟาร์มในบริเวณนอกเมืองหลวง Agartala เพื่อป้องกันการแพร่ระบาดของเชื้อไข้หวัดนก นอกจากนี้ ยังห้ามนำเข้าสัตว์ปีกและไข่จากบังคลาเทศ ซึ่งอยู่ในระยะ 10 กิโลเมตรจากเมือง Agartala
เบื้องต้นพบว่าติดเชื้อไวรัสชนิด H5 และอยู่ในระห! ว่างทดสอบว่าเป็นเชื้อไวรัสชนิด H5N1 หรือไม่ อย่างไรก็ดี ไม่มีรายงานการติดเชื้อไข้หวัดนกในมนุษย์

กรมประมงเตือนเกษตรกรรับมือภัยแล้ง

นางสมหญิง เปี่ยมสมบูรณ์ อธิบดีกรมประมง เปิดเผยว่า ขณะนี้หลายพื้นที่ของประเทศไทยสภาพอากาศกำลังย่างเข้าสู่ฤดูแล้ง ทำให้ปริมาณน้ำทั้งในแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติและแหล่งน้ำชลประทานลดน้อยลง โดยเฉพาะพื้นที่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือบริเวณริมฝั่งแม่น้ำโขง ซึ่งระดับน้ำลดต่ำลงทุกปี และปีนี้มีแนวโน้มลดลงอย่างต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่เดือนมีนาคมถึงเดือนพฤษภาคม จึงขอเตือนเกษตรกรผู้เพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์น้ำในพื้นที่ 7 จังหวัด ที่แม่น้ำโขงไหลผ่าน ได้แก่ เชียงราย เลย หนองคาย นครพนม มุกดาหาร อำนาจเจริญ และอุบลราชธานี
โดยทั้ง 7 จังหวัด มีการเพาะเลี้ยงปลากระชังในแม่น้ำโขงรวมกว่า 3,000 กระชัง มีผลผลิตสู่ตลาดประมาณ 7 พันตัน! ต่อปี กรมประมงจึงขอแนะนำให้เกษตรกรปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมการเลี้ยงปลา โดยปล่อยสัตว์น้ำลงเลี้ยงในปริมาณที่หนาแน่นน้อยกว่าปกติ เพื่อไม่ให้ปลาเกิดความเครียดในภาวะน้ำน้อย เลือกทำเลที่น้ำไหลสะดวก โดยระดับน้ำจุดที่วางกระชังไม่ควรต่ำกว่า 2 เมตร เพิ่มเวลาการตรวจสอบปลาในกระชัง และหมั่นสังเกตสถานการณ์ระดับน้ำในแม่น้ำโขงทุกวัน เพื่อลดผลกระทบที่จะเกิดขึ้น

Bird flu alert in India’s main poultry area

India’s main poultry production area, Andhra Pradesh, is on alert after Avian Influenza was confirmed on a duck farm.
Samples taken from Government Duck Farm, RK Nagar, Agartala, were sent to High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal and a government laboratory in Kolkata for testing. The tests confirmed that the samples are positive for H5 strain of Avian Influenza, a senior Health Ministry official said.

Poultry culled
At least 3,000 poultry, including chickens and ducks, have been culled in Tripura to control further spread of bird flu from the government duck farm.

The administration has also banned sale of any poultry in and around R K Nagar farm, six kms from the capital town.

"We have asked poultry farmers to report any unusual and large-scale deaths so as to take the necessary measures to confirm if there is any outbreak of bird flu here," said Dr Y Thirupathaiah, additional director, planning, directorate of animal husbandry.

Thirupathaiah states that all poultry farmers have been educated on the bio-security measures to be taken to tackle any eventuality. In case of any signs of bird flu in the state, the serum samples will have to be sent to the HSADL Bhopal for confirmation of the virus.

2006 bird flu
In 2006, bird flu fear led to huge losses in the state as poultry birds had to be culled in large numbers and eggs were also destroyed.

The staff of the animal husbandry department are also doing the rounds of poultry farms to detect any signs of the virus and are collecting blood samples. Though this happens on a regular basis, considering the outbreak in Agartala about the outbreak of bird flu, officials are asking for extra vigilance.

Nearly two-thirds of the poultry production of the country is contributed by Andhra Pradesh which is the reason for the caution.

ปากเท้าเปื่อยลามเกาหลีเหนือแล้ว

เกาหลีเหนือแถลงว่า พบการแพร่ระบาดของโรคปากเท้าเปื่อยในประเทศแล้ว โดยปัจจุบันพื้นที่ติดเชื้อส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในกรุงเปียงยาง นอกจากนี้ยังระบาดไปยังอีก 8 จังหวัด โดยจังหวัด North Hawanghae และ Gangwon ได้รับความเสียหายมากที่สุด ทั้งนี้ จำนวนวัวและสุกรมากกว่า 1,000 ตัวติดเชื้อ และมีหลายพันตัวตายจากโรคดังกล่าว จากข้อมูลอย่างเป็นทางการระบุว่าสุกร 17,522 ตัว มีโอกาสติดเชื้อ ซึ่งในจำนวนดังกล่าวตายไปแล้ว 8,640 ตัว
ทั้งนี้ เมื่อวันที่ 9 กุมภาพันธ์ 2554 เกาหลีเหนือรายงานการระบาดต่อองค์การอาหารและเกษตรแห่งสหประชาชาติ (FAO) โดยองค์การโรคระบาดสัตว์ระหว่างประเทศ (OIE) รายงานว่า ทางเกาหลีเหนือได้ฉี! ดยาสัตว์ด้วยยาที่พัฒนาในเกาหลีเหนือเอง แต่ก็ไม่มีประสิทธิภาพพอที่จะควบคุมโรคนี้

มะกันเรียกคืนแซลมอนรมควัน หวั่นปนเปื้อน Listeria

บริษัท St. James Smokehouse ในสหรัฐฯ ได้เรียกคืนผลิตภัณฑ์ปลาแซลมอนรมควัน Scotch Reserve Whiskey & Honey Smoked Scottish Salmon เป็นน้ำหนักรวมทั้งหมด 600 ปอนด์ หลั’จากกระทรวงเกษตรและงานบริการผู้บริโภคประจำรัฐ Florida พบว่าผลิตภัณฑ์กล่าวอาจปนเปื้อนเชื้อ Listeria Monocytogenes ปัจจุบันยังไม่พบผู้ป่วยที่เกิดจากการบริโภคผลิตภัณฑ์ดังกล่าว
ทั้งนี้ มีการเรียกคืนผลิตภัณฑ์ดังกล่าวจากห้างสรรพสินค้าใน 20 รัฐได้แก่ Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Louisiana, Maryland, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Mis! sissippi, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut และ New York
